NFL Power Rankings and TV Schedule for Week 6

2009 NFL Power Rankings: Week 6
power rankings taken from all of the major sports websites: si, espn, cbssports
1 (1) Colts 5-0-0 They're coasting into their bye week making a strong claim to being to being better than everyone in the league. (Kuharsky)
2 (2) Giants 5-0-0 Eli Manning learned that the best medicine for plantar fasciitis is a Sunday with the Raiders. (Clayton)
3 (3) Vikings 5-0-0 They seem to be growing stronger with each passing week. (Chadiha)
4 (4) Saints 4-0-0 Just a guess, but I'm thinking Drew Brees will come out firing after the bye, re-establishing his MVP credentials. (Sando)
5 (8) Broncos 5-0-0 The Broncos have silenced more doubters each week to the point where far fewer are around. (Kuharsky)
6 (11) Bengals 4-1-0 Time for the doubters to shut up; the Bengals are pretty good. (Chadiha)
7 (10) Eagles 3-1-0 Against the Bucs, Donovan McNabb got back into a passing rhythm with youngsters DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. (Clayton)
8 (9) Falcons 3-1-0 Matt Ryan & Co. seemed like a playoff team during their dismantling of the 49ers. Take it as a good sign for Atlanta. (Sando)
9 (5) Jets 3-2-0 Braylon Edwards already looks like a steal of a trade for the Jets. (Clayton)
10 (6) Patriots 3-2-0 Tom Brady is out of sync with his receivers, but no secondary is more out of sync than that of the Titans, who are the Pats' next foe. (Clayton)
11 (7) Ravens 3-2-0 Two tough losses and now a road trip to Minnesota? That's harsh. (Chadiha)
12 (14) Bears 3-1-0 A 3-1 record, much of it produced without injured linebacker Brian Urlacher, is pretty impressive. (Chadiha)
13 (15) Steelers 3-2-0 Rashard Mendenhall is making his case for a permanent starting job. (Chadiha)
14 (13) Packers 2-2-0 They'd better have done something about their offensive line during their bye week. (Chadiha)
15 (12) 49ers 3-2-0 The worst defeat at Candlestick Park since 1967 will force the 49ers to reassess heading into their bye week. At least Frank Gore is coming back. (Sando)
16 (16) Chargers 2-2-0 San Diego comes out of its bye into a critical home game against Denver that could signal a changing of the guard. (Kuharsky)
17 (17) Cowboys 3-2-0 The Cowboys have miles to go to play better football, but at least Miles Austin made Sunday's visit to the Chiefs profitable. (Clayton)
18 (21) Dolphins 2-3-0 After beating the Jets with extensive use of the Wildcat, what's next, the wishbone? (Clayton)
19 (19) Cardinals 2-2-0 One of these weeks, Beanie Wells will announce his arrival with a 100-yard rushing performance and a long-term spot in the Cards' offense. (Sando)
20 (24) Seahawks 2-3-0 Beating the Cardinals at home in Week 6 would affirm Seattle's belief that the Seahawks can win the division with Matt Hasselbeck healthy. (Sando)
21 (18) Jaguars 2-3-0 A complete dud in Seattle could allow them to show us how they bounce back from big adversity. (Kuharsky)
22 (20) Texans 2-3-0 The Texans' never-ending identity crisis continued with their failures in Arizona. A trip to Cincy might be another tough assignment. (Kuharsky)
23 (26) Panthers 1-3-0 Beating the declining Redskins isn't anything to brag about. Carolina still seems like a bad team trying to find its way. (Sando)
24 (22) Redskins 2-3-0 Congress might have to hold a hearing to determine why the Redskins' offense remains in a recession. (Clayton)
25 (23) Bills 1-4-0 Against the Browns, the Bills' no-huddle offense proved to be the falsest start of the 2009 season. (Clayton)
26 (27) Lions 1-4-0 Don't let the record fool you. This is a better team. (Chadiha)
27 (25) Titans 0-5-0 Facing New England at Gillette Stadium coming off a tough loss doesn't sound like a cure for all that's ailing Tennessee. (Kuharsky)
28 (29) Browns 1-4-0 They had to win eventually, right? (Chadiha)
29 (28) Raiders 1-4-0 A pathetic showing against the Giants showcased a starting quarterback who plays as if he isn't capable and doesn't care. (Kuharsky)
30 (30) Chiefs 0-5-0 K.C. was undone by little-known receiver Miles Austin in a game when it had a great chance to win. (Kuharsky)
31 (31) Buccaneers 0-5-0 The team that stood by Jerramy Stevens might add Matt Jones to the locker room? Not sure that's the right way to go. (Sando)
32 (32) Rams 0-5-0 The offense showed improvement with 400 yards and 27 first downs against the Vikings in Week 5, even though some yardage was in garbage time. (Sando)

1 Giants · Trends 1
You have to give Eli Manning credit for playing last week, but now he has to go to the Superdome and play that tough New Orleans defense. The best NFC team (for now) will be decided in that game.
2 Colts · Trends 2
The scary thing is they really haven't been healthy yet. The bye week will help in that area. Peyton Manning is on his way to another MVP.
3 Saints · Trends 3
Their bye came at a time they probably didn't want it since they were playing so well. It will be interesting to watch that defense matched up against that Giants offense.
4 Vikings · Trends 4
They showed against St. Louis that they are veteran enough to not have letdowns. Now they get two tough ones, against Baltimore and then Pittsburgh. We'll know how good they are in three weeks.
5 Broncos · Trends 5
Hard to believe they are here. But I believe now. Just a warning: Be careful Monday at San Diego. That could be an ambush. The Chargers are desperate.
6 Falcons · Trends 9
Matt Ryan and that passing game will be even better as the season moves along. Ryan is gaining more and more confidence and will get even more the rest of the way. They looked dominant at San Francisco.
7 Eagles · Trends 10
They will score a lot, so the key for them will be that defense. It seems to be getting better, but some of the offenses they've played are dreadful.
8 Bengals · Trends 11
They are for real. The defense is really improved. I still think the offense can do a lot more, and will as the season moves along. Cedric Benson adds the much-needed running dimension.

9 Bears · Trends 12
Coming off their bye, they face a good Atlanta team on the road. Jay Cutler will have to continue to play like he has the past three games.
10 Patriots · Trends 7
One of the glaring things that showed up against the Broncos was their lack of a pass rush. They have to be better there -- or they can forget about a Super Bowl.
11 Steelers · Trends 13
The pass rush finally showed up Sunday against the Lions, but that defense still isn't all the way back. The return of Troy Polamalu is badly needed.

12 Ravens · Trends 8
It's hard to believe that defense didn't keep a lead late against the Bengals. Now they get Brett Favre. Here's one thing they need to do: Let Joe Flacco loose more. They didn't against the Bengals, and it cost them.
13 Jets · Trends 6
Two road games, two losses. That has to be a concern. The defense struggled at Miami. Now the schedule gets easier, which should help them go on a little run.
14 Chargers · Trends 15
Here come the Broncos. If the Chargers are to have a real chance to win the division, they have to win that game. Did they find a defense during their bye week?
15 Cowboys · Trends 16
Was that a season saver against the Chiefs? They did find a much-needed deep threat in Miles Austin and Tony Romo came alive. For a half, it looked like Wade Philips might get it at halftime.
16 49ers · Trends 14
Thud. That's the 49ers defense crashing to Earth. They were exposed some against the Falcons. And they don't have an offense that can keep up.
17 Cardinals · Trends 18
They beat the Texans, but the defense is still having issues. They have to get better on that side of the ball quickly. They also aren't running the ball at all.
18 Packers · Trends 17
Aaron Rodgers better hope the bye fixed that offensive line. If not, he might not make it through the season.
19 Dolphins · Trends 19
Does anybody doubt Chad Henne should be playing now? His arm gives them another dimension. Henne, not the Wildcat, will decide this team's fate.
20 Seahawks · Trends 22
Did Matt Hasselbeck's return save the season? It sure looked that way against the Jaguars.
21 Texans · Trends 23
The defense continues to be a problem, although it did play better in the second half against the Cardinals. Now they have to go play a hot Bengals team on the road. That won't be easy
22 Jaguars · Trends 21
They get the perfect tonic for their showing in Seattle -- the St. Louis Rams. But the Jaguars aren't very good on defense and they have no pass rush with only four sacks.
23 Panthers · Trends 25
They got their first victory, but the offense still isn't good. The good news is that Julius Peppers showed up against the Redskins.
24 Redskins · Trends 20
Paging Mike Shanahan. Paging Mike Shanahan. It's only a matter of time.
25 Lions · Trends 28
They will be in a lot of high-scoring games. Their pass defense isn't that good. It will take another draft to fix that.
26 Titans · Trends 24
It isn't good. They can't stop anybody and their passing game isn't good enough to keep up. Can you believe it's this bad? I can't.
27 Browns · Trends 32
Wonder what Brady Quinn thought as he watched Derek Anderson complete two passes against the Bills? The passing game has no weapons -- they've been traded away -- and it shows.

28 Bills · Trends 26
When does T.O. pop? How's he feel about his year in Buffalo now? At least they have good wings.
29 Raiders · Trends 27
Sit JaMarcus Russell right now. He isn't good. He doesn't seem to care. The rest of the team isn't far behind.
30 Buccaneers · Trends 29
Is it time to go to Josh Freeman? It might be. Why not? Josh Johnson isn't very good.
31 Chiefs · Trends 31
There is progress. Matt Cassel played better against Dallas and the defense was better. They'll take it.
32 Rams · Trends 30
They look nastier than Rush Limbaugh's mouth. Sure, you want in, Rush? This is what happens when the talent pool is thin. You can't compete. They are two offseasons away from winning.

Week 4 NFL Power Rankings and TV Schedule

NFL Power Rankings
www.si.com
1
Last Week: 1 Baltimore Ravens (3-0)
After all those years of offensive struggles, the Ravens have totally remade themselves into a machine on that side of the ball. And it must be a sight to behold in Baltimore. In their two home dates so far, the Ravens offense has averaged 490 yards, 30 first downs and 36 points per game. Since starting last season 2-3, Baltimore has gone 14-3 including playoffs, with two of those losses coming against the hated Steelers, and the other against the Giants. The Ravens simply don't lose any more to inferior competition.

2
Last Week: 2 New Orleans Saints (3-0)
Only the Cowboys are out-rushing the Saints' 170.7 yards per game, and what a double-edge sword it is to try to play defense against New Orleans these days. Try to cheat up and take away the Saints run game, and Brees will pick you apart all day long with his right arm. Lay back and concentrate on keeping the Saints receivers in front of you, and your safeties are going to be rushing up on run defense for four quarters. We can't wait to see if Rex Ryan and his aggressive Jets defense provides a blueprint for slowing both the Saints running and passing games. Coaches around the league have their Xerox machines at the ready.

3
Last Week: 3 New York Giants (3-0)
Watching some of New York's utter domination at Tampa Bay on Sunday, it occurred to me that these two teams met in the first round of the NFC playoffs a little less than 21 months ago, on the same field. About now, I'm guessing that feels like another lifetime ago for your average Bucs fan, who probably can't quite envision when they might see another home playoff game. Giants fans can't quite remember what it feels like to not make the playoffs.

4
Last Week: 5 Indianapolis Colts (3-0)
Yeah, that Colts passing game really misses Marvin Harrison. Or the injured Anthony Gonzalez for that matter. Indy leads the league in passing through three weeks, with 322.7 yards per game. I'm starting to think Peyton Manning could consistently beat you throwing to three guys from the local plumbers and steamfitters union. But knowing Peyton, he'd want to choose the guys himself.

5
Last Week: 4 New York Jets (3-0)
If Rodney Harrison can call Terrell Owens "a straight-up clown" for not saying much of anything in his postgame news conference Sunday in Buffalo, what label will he use to describe Jets receiver David "Straight-up" Clowney, who was de-activated last week against the Titans because New York head coach Rex Ryan didn't appreciate him complaining about his Week 2 playing time via Twitter? Such minor annoyances are the only thing that passes for trouble these days in Jet-land.

6
Last Week: 7 Minnesota Vikings (3-0)
OK, a few house-keeping items to check off our list in the wake of Minnesota's last-second survival at home against San Francisco: Brett Favre's biceps tendon? It's fine. Can Favre still make a throw of longer than 20 yards? Uh, let's go with affirmative on that one. And when they have to, can the Vikings win with something other than their running game and defense? Yes. Yes, I'd say so.

7
Last Week: 9 New England Patriots (2-1)
The Patriots don't look real good right now for cutting veteran receiver Greg Lewis just before the season started and keeping the older Joey Galloway, who has struggled to find a role in New England's passing game. Galloway likely gets more time to see if he can contribute, but I wouldn't bet the mortgage just yet that he makes the whole season as a Patriot. We've seen New England cut its losses in midseason many times before.

8
Last Week: 6 Atlanta Falcons (2-1)
The Falcons are one of four teams that drew the early Week 4 bye this year, and of that group, only Philadelphia is going to enjoy its break. The Eagles are the only team coming off a win. Atlanta, Arizona and Carolina all have to sit around this weekend and think about how they got handled rather easily last week. I'm not even sure how the NFL determines who gets its bye when, but I did notice that these four teams have something in common of recent vintage: Last January, it was the Cardinals going through the Falcons, Panthers and Eagles on their way to that improbable Super Bowl run.

9
Last Week: 10 Philadelphia Eagles (2-1)
Andy Reid decided this week to end the team's second go-round with veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia and begin its third with veteran linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. Given the Eagles injury situation at linebacker and the eye-opening production of third-year quarterback Kevin Kolb, that just makes sense. But now we get to play the always popular game of Where Will Garcia Land? Given the past six years or so of Garcia's career, all guesses are valid.

10
Last Week: 12 San Diego Chargers (2-1)
The Chargers are talking this week about the need for going into Pittsburgh -- yet again -- and being more physical. Matching the Steelers bruising style of play with some hitting of their own. A lot of teams have talked like that before a game against the Steelers, but very few have actually accomplished it. With defensive tackle Jamal Williams out for the season, outside linebacker Shawne Merriman still not himself, and San Diego's offensive line missing two starters, I don't see how the Chargers and their No. 2-ranked passing game win the physical battle. Or the game.

2009 Power Rankings: Week 4
www.espn.com
1 (1) Ravens 3-0-0 They've got a great defense and an offense averaging 34 points per game. (Chadiha)
2 (3) Colts 3-0-0 The Colts seem to be in their traditional early season form, which means they are hard to beat. (Kuharsky)
3 (2) Giants 3-0-0 The Giants stay ahead of their long injury list by winning. (Clayton)
4 (7) Saints 3-0-0 They're 2-0 on the road and have four of their next five games at home. (Sando)
5 (5) Vikings 3-0-0 Brett Favre has lived up to the hype so far. (Chadiha)
6 (8) Jets 3-0-0 The Jets team that beat the Titans on Sunday might have more staying power than the 8-3 Jets that beat Tennessee in 2008. (Clayton)
7 (10) Patriots 2-1-0 Tom Brady might not have his offense in sync yet, but you can see it's coming. (Clayton)
8 (4) Falcons 2-1-0 You know the Falcons have made progress when a road loss to the Patriots stands as a disappointment. (Sando)
9 (9) Eagles 2-1-0 Expect Donovan McNabb to return after the bye week, but Kevin Kolb kept the offense humming during his absence. (Clayton)
10 (12) Packers 2-1-0 They should be pumped for their first meeting with Brett Favre. (Chadiha)
11 (24) Bengals 2-1-0 They haven't been this impressive since winning the division in 2005. (Chadiha)
12 (11) Chargers 2-1-0 They have a great opportunity to make a statement in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers will be feeling desperate. (Kuharsky)
13 (20) Broncos 3-0-0 A great start against lightweights will now be measured against a much tougher five-pack. (Kuharsky)
14 (14) Bears 2-1-0 It's now hard to remember how lousy Jay Cutler played in Week 1. (Chadiha)
15 (13) 49ers 2-1-0 Nothing quite like a home game against the Rams to cleanse the palate following the taste of bitter defeat. (Sando)
16 (6) Steelers 1-2-0 Think they miss Troy Polamalu? (Chadiha)
17 (15) Cowboys 2-1-0 Tashard Choice and Felix Jones prove the Cowboys can still have a running offense when Marion Barber is injured. (Clayton)
18 (16) Titans 0-3-0 Drops have to be a big practice issue this week, on special teams and for pass targets. (Kuharsky)
19 (18) Cardinals 1-2-0 The bye week comes at a good time because Kurt Warner is hurting and the Cardinals have much to figure out. (Sando)
20 (17) Texans 1-2-0 The Texans lost one they had to have to the Raiders last year. They'll try again, this time in Houston. (Kuharsky)
21 (21) Bills 1-2-0 Terrell Owens' 185-game reception streak was snapped Sunday. The next thing to snap will be T.O. (Clayton)
22 (27) Jaguars 1-2-0 Would a win over winless Tennessee qualify as an upset at this point? (Kuharsky)
23 (22) Seahawks 1-2-0 Two of their top three corners are out and the other one, Ken Lucas, has been banged up. Hello, Peyton Manning. (Sando)
24 (19) Dolphins 0-3-0 With Chad Pennington likely done for the season, the rebuilding program officially begins with new QB Chad Henne. (Clayton)
25 (25) Panthers 0-3-0 Who are these guys? Carolina seems to be searching for its identity three games into the season. (Sando)
26 (23) Redskins 1-2-0 As much as Clinton Portis is being stopped on goal-line plays, maybe Jim Zorn should let Portis call a few plays. (Clayton)
27 (26) Raiders 1-2-0 Raiders' passing average: 119.7 yards per game. Next worst passing average: Cleveland (146.7). (Kuharsky)
28 (31) Lions 1-2-0 That won't be the last victory they get this season. (Chadiha)
29 (29) Browns 0-3-0 As ugly as this looks, it's only going to get worse. (Chadiha)
30 (30) Chiefs 0-3-0 Improved third-down efficiency on offense has to be one of the Chiefs' top priorities. (Kuharsky)
31 (28) Buccaneers 0-3-0 Raheem Morris was all smiles when the Bucs hired him as head coach. He could not have known what awaited. (Sando)
32 (32) Rams 0-3-0 If QBs Kyle Boller or Marc Bulger cannot find open receivers, it's probably because there aren't any. (Sando)

Power Rankings
www.cbssports.com
1 Giants · Trends 1
Beating Tampa Bay isn't that impressive, but doing it the way they did after a big divisional road game at Dallas is. They are running it as well as anybody, which has been the offensive key.
2 Colts · Trends 2
They have to be thrilled with their 3-0 start because they haven't been close to being full strength. Watch out when they get their players -- see: Bob Sanders -- healthy.
3 Saints · Trends 4
Even with the passing game not clicking, they found a way at Buffalo. Now comes the fun stuff: Their passing game against the Jets defense. Can't wait.
4 Ravens · Trends 5
Joe Flacco is the biggest difference in this team. The defense is still top notch, but Flacco's passing ability takes them up a level. He can win games now with his right arm.
5 Jets · Trends 6
Rex Ryan loves a challenge. He has one this week in the Saints offense. For Mark Sanchez, it will be his first major road test. The Superdome will be loud. Does he go to 4-0?
6 Vikings · Trends 7
At 3-0, they get a huge division test when Brett Favre faces his former team, the Packers. Start the hype. Oh, it did this past Sunday.
7 Patriots · Trends 8
Tom Brady is starting to show signs of coming to life. That's bad news for the rest of the league. Fred Taylor is running the ball well, which helps.
8 Falcons · Trends 3
They head to their bye off a bad loss at New England. They did nothing in the second half. The run defense has to play better.
9 Eagles · Trends 11
Kevin Kolb is making life without Donovan McNabb a lot easier. The emergence of DeSean Jackson bodes well for the rest of the season.
10 Chargers · Trends 13
Is there any doubt this is Philip Rivers' team? The Chargers are a passing team now, which is OK with Rivers running the show. The Steelers will challenge that passing game Sunday.
11 Cowboys · Trends 10
Yes, they beat the Panthers on Monday night. Did it look good? For a half, it was bad. They finally got it going, but we'll know more about them when they go to Denver this week.
12 Bengals · Trends 14
They have to avoid a letdown against the Browns. Past Bengals teams might not have, but this team is better. Even so, they need to be careful.
13 Steelers · Trends 9
Their defense is letting them down late in games. They miss Troy Polamalu in a big way, especially in the fourth quarter. The good thing is the running game showed some life in Cincinnati.
14 Packers · Trends 15
You don't think these guys want to beat up Favre this week, do you? Aaron Rodgers will be juiced as well to prove the Packers made the right decision. They did, by the way.
15 Broncos · Trends 16
Maybe Josh McDaniels knew what he was doing after all, and we were all wrong. That defense is really playing well, not giving up a touchdown the past two games. Of course, it was against Cleveland and Oakland.
16 Bears · Trends 19
The past two weeks we saw why they traded to get Jay Cutler. The kid can play, even if some, like my colleague Clark Judge, don't think he can.
17 49ers · Trends 12
They're one Brett Favre laser away from being 3-0. The defense is really making strides. They have to play without Frank Gore for a couple of weeks, which hurts.
18 Cardinals · Trends 17
That Super hangover looks very real. They have not played well, especially on defense. It's hard to believe that is the same defense that played so well in the playoff run.
19 Seahawks · Trends 20
Too many injuries are crippling this team. They didn't lose because of Seneca Wallace playing for Matt Hasselbeck, but the injuries are adding up.
20 Titans · Trends 21
Message to Titans: Win at Jacksonville this week or kiss the playoffs goodbye. If they start 0-4, they're done.
21 Dolphins · Trends 22
Chad Pennington is gone for the season, so now they turn to Chad Henne. It was time anyway. Find out if he's the long-term answer.
22 Redskins · Trends 23
At 1-2, with that loss to the Lions, things aren't going so well. Jim Zorn has to be feeling the pressure already.
23 Bills · Trends 24
Where is Terrell Owens? Anybody? Wasn't he supposed to liven up that passing game? He hasn't. Or is Trent Edwards the reason?
24 Jaguars · Trends 27
Their offense came alive against the Texans, which is a good sign for the rest of the season. But that defense isn't very good. It has to play better.
25 Texans · Trends 18
They've used a lot of first-round picks on defensive players the past six years and they can't seem to stop anybody. What the heck is going on? Changing coordinators might not have been the answer. It's the players.
26 Raiders · Trends 25
I thought JaMarcus Russell would turn the corner this season. He did: Smack dab into a truck called the Ryan Leaf Delivery Service. Nothing ever gets completed. Russell hasn't improved at all, and neither have the Raiders.
27 Panthers · Trends 26
Could anyone have imagined this team getting off to an 0-3 start? They can't pass the football very well. That limits them big time. It will be tough climbing out of this hole.
28 Lions · Trends 32
What Matt Stafford did against the Redskins is a good indicator of things to come in the future. Be patient, Detroit. You have the right guy.
29 Buccaneers · Trends 28
This season is officially a disaster. That offense is horrible and the defense can't stop anybody. That's a bad combination. Is benching Byron Leftwich the answer? They think so, so Josh Johnson takes over.
30 Rams · Trends 29
The offense just can't score enough. It looks like Marc Bulger's injury could put Kyle Boller in as the starter at quarterback. But they have bigger issues than just QB.
31 Chiefs · Trends 30
Are they starting to wonder about Matt Cassel? They should. They paid a lot of money to a player who isn't playing well and isn't taking shots down the field.
32 Browns · Trends 31
They are an offensive disaster. They can't score. And all Eric Mangini can do is play coy on the quarterback situation and do his usual mumbling about things. Nice hire.

NFL Power Rankings for Week 3

Power Rankings WEEK 3
according to www.cbssportsline.com
1 Giants · Trends 3
Seeing how the passing game played in Dallas has to give this team hope for the rest of the season. Those young receivers came up big. Eli Manning was sharp. The defense needs to play better, especially against the run.
2 Colts · Trends 5
They showed Miami what's important in the NFL: Scoring points, not ball control. They've played two close games, but 2-0 is still 2-0, right?
3 Falcons · Trends 6
We'll know if they belong here when they go to New England next week and face an angry Patriots team. They better hope the defense tightens up. The offense can be explosive.
4 Saints · Trends 10
They play with their foot on the pedal all game long. It's a treat to watch. Drew Brees is on fire and Sean Payton doesn't let up. The defense is still iffy.
5 Ravens · Trends 11
The best thing to come out of the first two weeks is how well Joe Flacco has played. He has five touchdown passes in two games. But that didn't look like a Ravens defense in San Diego.
6 Jets · Trends 16
Defense, defense and more defense. Watch out when Mark Sanchez gets even better. This team is better than I expected.
7 Vikings · Trends 13
They've defeated two bad teams on the road, which was to be expected. The jury is still out. What happens when they have to throw to win?
8 Patriots · Trends 1
Where has the offense gone? What has happened to the big play? This isn't what we've come to expect with the Patriots. Tom Brady looks jumpy.
9 Steelers · Trends 2
At some point, they need to get the running game going. Ben Roethlisberger is taking too many big hits. It's a huge game this week at Cincinnati. Do the champs fall to 1-2?
10 Cowboys · Trends 12
Talk all you want about how poorly Tony Romo played, but if they don't improve on defense it won't matter. That unit has given up too many big plays in two games in the passing game. That needs to be fixed quickly.
11 Eagles · Trends 4
It's hard to gauge their loss to the Saints because Donovan McNabb didn't play. But he doesn't play defense. That unit was shredded.
12 49ers · Trends 14
They are playing some impressive defense, which we might have expected with Mike Singletary as the coach. Don't you still wonder if they can stay up here? Frank Gore is a beast.
13 Chargers · Trends 8
They have a ton of injuries already, which could impact their season. They will still win the division, but what about after that?
14 Bengals · Trends 19
That just might have been a season saver at Green Bay. The defense will be something to watch as the season progresses. It's pretty good. Are they ready for the champs? They better be.
15 Packers · Trends 9
The offensive line is an issue. Aaron Rodgers is getting hit and dumped way too much. The defense also didn't play well against the Bengals. Maybe they aren't as good as we thought.
16 Broncos · Trends 17
Josh McDaniels has his team at 2-0. You have to give him credit for that. The big shock has to be how well the defense is playing.
17 Cardinals · Trends 18
Kurt Warner and the offense played well against Jacksonville, with Warner doing what he wanted, and now might have to get in a shootout with Peyton Manning. Lots of passing that night will make for a fun game.
18 Texans · Trends 21
If they can play offense like they did against the Titans they will be tough for anybody they play. But that defense needs work.
19 Bears · Trends 20
So Jay Cutler isn't that bad after all. He played well in beating the Steelers to hush some critics. The better news is the improved play of the defense -- even without Brian Urlacher.
20 Seahawks · Trends 15
That was a tackling disaster in San Francisco and now Matt Hasselbeck has a broken rib. Ouch. Why does he always seem to get hurt?
21 Titans · Trends 7
They opened last season 10-0 and are staring 0-3 in the face with a trip this week to play the Jets. What happened to the defense? Where has all the nastiness gone?
22 Dolphins · Trends 24
They controlled the clock against the Colts, ran the ball for over 200 yards and did what they intended to do. But they didn't score enough touchdowns. That's what not having big plays does to a team, and the Dolphins now must go to San Diego.
23 Redskins · Trends 25
They aren't scoring points and just haven't looked that good on offense. They could have made a lot of survivor pool people angry if they lost to the Rams.
24 Bills · Trends 26
They've played well in their first two games, especially on offense. Fred Jackson might keep Marshawn Lynch on the bench. Can they slow the Saints?
25 Raiders · Trends 28
They could easily be 2-0. They just might be better than some expected. JaMarcus Russell now has two big fourth-quarter drives in two games.
26 Panthers · Trends 23
Even when Jake Delhomme doesn't throw it to the other team, they have issues. They can't stop anybody. The defense has become a major issue.
27 Jaguars · Trends 22
How far have they fallen since 2007? The real problems are on defense. They can't rush the passer, so the opposing quarterbacks have a field day. Just ask Kurt Warner.
28 Buccaneers · Trends 27
Remember when the Bucs were good on defense? They sure aren't now. They can't stop anybody. The pass defense is terrible.
29 Rams · Trends 29
Where, oh where is the offense? They just don't score. They have seven points in two games. Ouch.
30 Chiefs · Trends 30
They got Matt Cassel back and played better. But it's going to be a tough first season for Todd Haley.
31 Browns · Trends 31
They just don't do anything on offense. That's an issue that will carry on all year long. It's going to be a tough year for Eric Mangini and his gang. Still like him as a coach, Randy Lerner?
32 Lions · Trends 32
It was better against Minnesota, which is progress. Stop asking who should play quarterback. No matter what happens, it has to be Matt Stafford.

according to www.espn.com

1 (10) Ravens 2-0-0 They're balanced on offense and tough on defense. (Chadiha)
2 (3) Giants 2-0-0 Mario Manningham might not be Plaxico Burress, but he's becoming an Eli Manning go-to guy. (Clayton)
3 (5) Colts 2-0-0 The first of two back-to-back prime-time road games went just fine in Miami. (Kuharsky)
4 (7) Falcons 2-0-0 Taking care of business within the division is key, but the Falcons can take another step if they win at New England on Sunday. (Sando)
5 (8) Vikings 2-0-0 So far, so good with Brett Favre in charge. (Chadiha)
6 (1) Steelers 1-1-0 They have got to find a running game. (Chadiha)
7 (12) Saints 2-0-0 Scoring 48 points at Philly isn't easy. Drew Brees is completing 75 percent of his passes to lead the MVP race early.(Sando)
8 (16) Jets 2-0-0 Rex Ryan has blitzed his way into first place in the AFC East. Division, beware. (Clayton)
9 (4) Eagles 1-1-0 Kevin Kolb put up great passing numbers, but the Eagles can't fly without Donovan McNabb. (Clayton)
10 (2) Patriots 1-1-0 Bill Belichick must go back to the drawing board for a November rematch against the Jets. (Clayton)
11 (6) Chargers 1-1-0 Might that home loss to the Ravens become an outcome that places a playoff matchup in Baltimore? (Kuharsky)
12 (11) Packers 1-1-0 Where was the Packers' pass protection (six sacks) and discipline (11 penalties) against the Bengals? (Chadiha)
13 (18) 49ers 2-0-0 The 49ers want to run the ball and they are, but don't overlook Shaun Hill. He's 9-3 as the 49ers' starter. (Sando)
14 (15) Bears 1-1-0 The Bears need more of the Jay Cutler who showed up to beat the Steelers. (Chadiha)
15 (13) Cowboys 1-1-0 Two problems don't go away: critical turnovers by Tony Romo and giving up big plays on defense. (Clayton)
16 (9) Titans 0-2-0 Mistake-filled first two weeks are fueling those critics who predicted a big drop-off after a 13-3 season. (Kuharsky)
17 (23) Texans 1-1-0 Everyone is wary of saying too much about the great victory in Tennessee, because historically the Texans have had some duds for follow-ups. (Kuharsky)
18 (17) Cardinals 1-1-0 Beating the Colts at home in Week 3 would validate the Cardinals' blowout victory at Jacksonville while potentially forcing a tie atop the NFC West. (Sando)
19 (19) Dolphins 0-2-0 The Wildcat dominated the Colts but Miami lost the game by four. Maybe the "Cat" isn't that wild. (Clayton)
20 (24) Broncos 2-0-0 Their two remaining games against the AFC North aren't likely to produce the same results their first two did. (Kuharsky)
21 (21) Bills 1-1-0 He's lost two offensive tackles and an offensive coordinator, but Trent Edwards is hanging in there as a no-huddle quarterback. (Clayton)
22 (14) Seahawks 1-1-0 Injuries always seem to be the big story for Seattle. Matt Hasselbeck's ribs aren't going to feel good any time soon. (Sando)
23 (20) Redskins 1-1-0 Playing St. Louis and Detroit in back-to-back weeks is a gift that buys time for the offense to start clicking. (Clayton)
24 (26) Bengals 1-1-0 This team would be 2-0 if it hadn't blown the final minute of its season opener. (Chadiha)
25 (22) Panthers 0-2-0 Jake Delhomme was much better in Week 2, but his two-game pace works out to eight touchdown passes and 40 interceptions. (Sando)
26 (27) Raiders 1-1-0 Better than many expected, but how long can they endure the poor play of JaMarcus Russell? (Kuharsky)
27 (25) Jaguars 0-2-0 It's time for the rookie wide receivers to see some action and make some contributions for the struggling Jags. (Kuharsky)
28 (29) Buccaneers 0-2-0 The Bucs have allowed 900 yards in their first two games. They even made the Bills look good. (Sando)
29 (28) Browns 0-2-0 Two blowout losses to open the season don't bode well. (Chadiha)
30 (30) Chiefs 0-2-0 Two turnovers, other miscues undid a lot of stat advantages in loss to Oakland. (Kuharsky)
31 (31) Lions 0-2-0 Even with two defeats, they already seem better than last season. (Chadiha)
32 (32) Rams 0-2-0 The Rams desperately need more punch from their passing game. Donnie Avery has been a nonfactor so far. (Sando)

NFL Power Rankings Week 3
according to www.si.com
1

Last Week: 4 Baltimore Ravens (2-0)
It was a real debate on whether to elevate the Ravens or the Saints to the top spot this week. Both have featured dynamic offenses thus far, with defenses giving up about 25 points per game. But the Ravens get the nod, based on the quality of their Week 2 win. They won at San Diego against a healthy Philip Rivers. The Saints won at Philadelphia, with an injured Donovan McNabb playing spectator. And if you're wondering, I checked and the Ravens and Saints don't play this season. Unless it's in Miami in early February. Can I get a mulligan on my Super Bowl pick?

2

Last Week: 5 New Orleans Saints (2-0)
The Saints are averaging 46.5 points per game, which is more than a touchdown per game higher than the record-setting 2007 Patriots, who put up 36.8 points per game en route to a 589-point regular season. So, by my math, if the Saints average 35.5 points per game from here on out, they score 590 this season and break New England's two-year-old mark. Not that that's a necessity or anything. The last three teams to hold the one-season scoring mark didn't win the Super Bowl: 2007 Patriots, 1998 Vikings, 1983 Redskins.

3

Last Week: 6 New York Giants (2-0)
Circle Week 6 on your calendar, then pinpoint the Giants-Saints matchup at the Superdome. Why? Because my hunch is we'll be watching 5-0 New York versus 4-0 New Orleans in an early-season showdown for NFC supremacy. All that stands in the way of the Giants reaching that game undefeated are trips to Tampa Bay and Kansas City the next two weeks, followed by a home game against Oakland. See? Like I said, 5-0.

4

Last Week: 13 New York Jets (2-0)
Yeah, OK, I've bought into Jets mania. New York jumps up nine spots this week, tying it with Cincinnati for the biggest leap of the week. Now it's a New York-New York doubleheader at the No. 3 and 4 spots in our rankings, and you know that kind of convergence always sparks dreams of a Giants-Jets Super Bowl. But the next two weeks will tell us plenty more about young Mark Sanchez and his first-place team. New York plays host to the desperate Titans this week, and then travels to New Orleans in Week 4.

5

Last Week: 11 Indianapolis Colts (2-0)
I swear it looked like Peyton Manning didn't even perspire in 85-degree Miami the other night. Suzy Kolber was sweatier. That's how little the Colts had the ball in a game that put the lie to the time-tested axioms that big rushing totals and dominating the clock leads to victory. Miami had the ball for 45:07 and ran for 239 yards, becoming the third team to lose this season among the six who have rushed for 200 yards-plus.

6

Last Week: 10 Atlanta Falcons (2-0)
The Falcons took care of business at home to start the season, beating both Miami and Carolina. But four of their next five games are on the road, and it's a grinder of a stretch: at New England, at San Francisco, at Dallas and at New Orleans, sandwiched around a visit from Chicago. If Atlanta can keep its nose above .500 at 4-3 through Week 8, the second half of the season sets up for another run at the playoffs.

7

Last Week: 12 Minnesota Vikings (2-0)
The Vikings are the league's only 2-0 team that has accomplished it on the road and you have to figure that bodes well. They didn't win their second road game of the season last year until Week 12, and they still managed to go 10-6 and win the NFC North. But road wins are no rarity so far this season. Visiting teams were 16-16 in the first two weeks, going 7-9 in Week 1 and 9-7 in Week 2.

8

Last Week: 2 Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1)
Look, there's no shame in losing at Chicago. I read somewhere the Steelers are 1-12 there against the Bears, so they've had some practice at it over the years. And the trip to the Windy City wasn't a complete lost cause, because the Steelers rushing game looked considerably better than it had against the Titans, even getting a rare contribution from Rashard Mendenhall.

9

Last Week: 1 New England Patriots (1-1)
I'm trying to imagine what would happen if Patriots owner Robert Kraft asked head coach Bill Belichick to record one of those fire-up-the-fans voice-mail messages for New England's season ticket holders, like the one the Jets' Rex Ryan did for New York before the Patriots game? While he's at it, Kraft might as well ask Belichick to release a detailed New England injury report.

10

Last Week: 7 Philadelphia Eagles (1-1)
Without McNabb in the lineup, I'm not of a mind to downgrade the Eagles too severely for that blowout loss at home to the Saints. But the whole quarterback contingent in Philly is a fascinating sub-plot that might extend all season, and it's as if QB collector Jon Gruden has taken control of Andy Reid's body -- now there's an image -- and can't stockpile enough arms.

College Football Power Rankings - Week 2
www.espn.com
1 Florida (15) 2-0 375 "Preseason" is over, as Florida rolled over Troy, 56-6, in its final tune-up before the Gators' much-anticipated SEC opener against Tennessee.
2 Texas 2-0 354 Texas overcame a sluggish start against Wyoming before coming alive in the second half in a 41-10 win. Up next for the Longhorns is a visit from Texas Tech, the team that dashed UT's title hopes last season.
3 USC 2-0 349 Those eager to toss USC's season into the rebuilding bin received a rude awakening as freshman QB Matt Barkley combined with Joe McKnight and Stafon Johnson on an 86-yard TD drive that pushed the Trojans past Ohio State in the Horseshoe, 18-15.
4 Alabama 2-0 331 Mark Ingram was battling the flu and Julio Jones sat out most of the game with a bruised knee, but Trent Richardson (118 yards rushing, two TDs) and Mike McCoy (100 yards receiving, one TD) made sure the Tide didn't miss a beat in a 40-14 win over FIU.
5 Penn State 2-0 294 Penn State's defense was never really threatened by Syracuse and the Nittany Lions needed a couple of big plays from Evan Royster and a typically-efficient performance from Daryll Clark to top Syracuse 28-7.
6 California 2-0 284 Another 50-plus points, another electrifying performance from Jahvid Best, another win for California. The Bears trounced Eastern Washington, 59-7, and have a visit to Minnesota next week before beginning Pac-10 play at Oregon.
7 Mississippi 1-0 280 Ole Miss was off this week after opening the season with a win at Memphis, but the Rebels rose by virtue of Oklahoma State's fall.
8 Brigham Young 2-0 278 BYU only led Tulane 6-3 midway through the second quarter but the Cougars exploded for 48 unanswered points in a 54-3 win. BYU returns home where it will host Florida State as the Cougars aim for another win against a school from a BCS conference.
9 Boise State 2-0 244 Kellen Moore threw four TD passes as Boise State's unbeaten trek took another step forward against Miami (Ohio). The win was the Broncos 100th this decade, joining Oklahoma as the only schools to hit the century mark in wins in the 2000s.
10 LSU 2-0 241 Les Miles called LSU's 23-9 win over Vanderbilt "imperfect." It's probably an accurate depiction of the Tigers through two games. But style points can wait. Wins, especially in the SEC, don't have to be pretty.
11 Ohio State 1-1 206 Questions abound in Columbus after Ohio State fans watched helplessly as a freshman QB snatched a historic win away from the Buckeyes. Losing to USC in that fashion hurts, but the ineffectiveness of its offense stings OSU even more going forward.
12 Oklahoma 1-1 197 It may have been Idaho State but Oklahoma fans had to take some solace watching the Sooners rack up 64 points in their first full game without Sam Bradford. Landry Jones threw three TDs and OU had five rushing TDs in the shutout win.
13 Georgia Tech 2-0 187 Georgia Tech blew a 24-point lead before rallying to beat Clemson last Thursday, 30-27. The ACC's Thursday night showcase continues this week when the Yellow Jackets visit Miami.
14 Virginia Tech 1-1 181 Virginia Tech rebounded from its loss to Alabama the previous week with a 52-10 win over Marshall. Running backs Ryan Williams and David Wilson combined for 329 yards rushing and four TDs.
15 TCU 1-0 167 TCU sent Virginia to its second straight home loss with a 30-14 win, holding the Cavaliers to 177 yards of total offense and just seven first downs. The Horned Frogs host Texas State on Saturday.
16 Miami (FL) 1-0 143 Miami's brutal, four-game opening stretch continues with a visit from Georgia Tech on Thursday night, followed by a trip to Virginia Tech.
17 Cincinnati 2-0 113 Cincinnati will need to keep finding ways to get Mardy Gilyard the ball. The senior reached the end zone four times in a 70-3 win over Southeast Missouri State -- twice receiving, once on a punt return and once on a run.
18 Oklahoma State 1-1 110 Just when it looked like OSU had recovered from a poor start, things turned sour again in the fourth quarter it fell to Houston 45-35. The schedule turns soft the next couple of weeks, giving OSU a chance to rebound, but this one hurts.
19 Nebraska 2-0 107 Zac Lee and the Cornhuskers have been impressive in their first two outings. Nebraska's national credentials will be put to the test with a visit to Virginia Tech on Saturday.
20 Houston 2-0 85 Not a bad way to head into a bye week. Oklahoma State knew what to expect from Case Keenum & Co., but the Cowboys just couldn't contain the Cougars as they dropped their first top 5 team in almost 25 years.
21 Utah 2-0 72 San Jose State made Utah work until the very end to collect its 16th straight win, 24-14. Consecutive win No. 17 will be even more difficult to come by with a visit to Oregon on Saturday.
22 Michigan 2-0 65 As one freshman QB sent a Big Ten team to a crushing loss, another sent one to a euphoric victory. Tate Forcier has many more plays left in his Wolverines career, but there'll be few he remembers more than his TD to Greg Mathews to beat Notre Dame.
23 Georgia 1-1 56 It was a little too close for comfort against South Carolina, as Georgia was dangerously close to an 0-2 start before pulling out a 41-37 win. The Bulldogs travel to Arkansas on Saturday.
24 Kansas 2-0 44 Todd Reesing led the Kansas offense to 576 total yards in a 34-7 win over UTEP. The Jayhawks' defense held the Miners to just 4 yards rushing.
25 North Carolina 2-0 31 It's not often the opposing team gifts you the game-winning score, but North Carolina isn't complaining after a late safety gave the Tar Heels a 12-10 win on the road against UConn.

2009 Coach Hot Seat Ratings
www.cbssportsline.com
We should add Jim Tressel to the mix too. Whether we want to believe it or not as buckeye fans, he has got to be feeling some warmth. At least some pressure to get some balls or a new offensive cord.
Coach Hot Seat Ratings
Dan Hawkins, Colorado:
Hawkins moves up to the No. 1 spot after his Buffaloes got spanked by Toledo. Colorado is now 0-2 and the seat couldn't be any hotter. Things should get alot hotter in the coming weeks as Colorado has to play at West Virginia and at Texas. The only thing saving Hawkins could be the school doesn't have the money to buy him out.

Al Groh, Virginia:
Groh remains in the No. 2 spot on the hot seat rankings after his team falls to 0-2. He was already on the hot seat at the beginning of the season, but after losing the season opener at home to William & Mary things got hotter. Let's see if the Cavs can pull off an upset against Southern Mississippi this weekend.

Steve Kragthorpe, Louisville:
He was the only "5" rated coach in Dennis Dodd's preseason rankings. Despite winning the first game of the year against Indiana State, Kragthorpe is still on the hot seat. He only has a 12-13 career record in his third season as coach and things have never been the same since he replaced Bobby Petrino.

Todd Dodge, North Texas:
Entering his third season, Dodge has one of the worst coaching records at 3-21. The Mean Green were once the dominating team of the Sun Belt, but in past seasons they've been the doormat. Out of conference results don't mean much for Dodge, but he has to start winning some conference games.

George O'Leary, UCF:
Not only has the coach faced lots of criticism for what happened in the death of Ereck Plancher, but his 27-37 career record is the biggest problem. After finishing 4-8 last season, UCF barely beat Samford in the season opener. UCF has some winable games coming up (Memphis and Buffalo), so stay tuned.

Others to watch: Mark Snyder, Marshall; Charlie Weis, Notre Dame; Doug Martin, Kent State; Robb Akey, Idaho; Randy Shannon, Miami (Fla.); Ron Zook, Illinois.

2009 NFL Week 1 Power Rankings

NFL 2009 Season Starts Tonight with Thursday Night Football! The Steelers vs the Titans. I highly doubt there will be any dancing on the terrible towel tonight in PA. Start time: 8:30

NFL 2009 Power Rankings: Week 1
according to www.espn.com
1 (1) Steelers 12-4-0 They're loaded with talent and their coach knows how to maximize it. Can you say "repeat"? (Chadiha)
2 (2) Patriots 11-5-0 QB Tom Brady's broad shoulders have to carry an aging defense. (Clayton)
3 (3) Giants 12-4-0 The Giants have concerns on defense, but they buy time with solid ground game. (Clayton)
4 (4) Eagles 9-6-1 QB Donovan McNabb isn't wild about Wildcat, but he's the Eagles wild card to success. (Clayton)
5 (6) Chargers 8-8-0 Even if the Chargers are get caught up in the hype, they will win the division. (Kuharsky)
6 (5) Colts 12-4-0 Left tackle is the one big issue, but they'll work around it as much as possible. (Kuharsky)
7 (7) Titans 13-3-0 Life gets easier after difficult first six games, four of which are on the road. (Kuharsky)
8 (8) Falcons 11-5-0 A year of seasoning for Matt Ryan should put the Falcons in better position. Coach Mike Smith's even keel also seems helpful. (Sando)
9 (9) Vikings 10-6-0 Schism or not, Brett Favre makes this team a championship contender. (Chadiha)
10 (10) Ravens 11-5-0 They're lucky WR Derrick Mason decided to return from retirement. (Chadiha)
11 (13) Bears 9-7-0 I still don't see how Jay Cutler can play his best without proven wide receivers. (Chadiha)
12 (17) Packers 6-10-0 It all comes down to whether that defense can play better with a new 3-4 scheme. (Chadiha)
13 (12) Cardinals 9-7-0 QB Kurt Warner and key veterans sound a bit concerned after a lackluster preseason. The Cardinals still must prove they can be consistent. (Sando)
14 (11) Panthers 12-4-0 It's tough to set expectations for this group after so much staff turnover and the way Carolina faltered in the postseason. (Sando)
15 (18) Seahawks 4-12-0 The Seahawks are rising in the rankings after QB Matt Hasselbeck proved he could take a hit during the preseason. LT Walter Jones' health also key. (Sando)
16 (15) Dolphins 11-5-0 The Dolphins hope to avert the three-game drop that usually hits a team that goes from worst to first in a division. (Clayton)
17 (14) Cowboys 9-7-0 WR Roy Williams is catching everything in practice despite a sore shoulder, but he needs big season for the offense to thrive. (Clayton)
18 (19) Saints 8-8-0 Skepticism seems appropriate until the Saints prove they've finally upgraded their defense. Until then, it's fantasy football with Drew Brees. (Sando)
19 (16) Texans 8-8-0 LB Brian Cushing alone can't solve the defensive issues that lingered through preseason.
20 (20) Redskins 8-8-0 QB Jason Campbell appears improved now that coach Jim Zorn lets him throw more downfield. (Clayton)
21 (21) Bills 7-9-0 Firing offensive coordinator Turk Schonert nine days before the season opener is a sign of total panic in Buffalo. (Clayton)
22 (22) 49ers 7-9-0 Establishing a hard-nosed ground game was the first step for coach Mike Singletary and offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. Can the passing game catch up? (Sando)
23 (23) Jets 9-7-0 Mark Sanchez continues to appear confident as a starter. He's seemingly more advanced than most rookie QBs.
24 (24) Bengals 4-11-1 Love this year's version of "Hard Knocks." Unfortunately, the Bengals' playoff hopes can be summed up by Chad Ochocinco's trademark saying: "Child, please." (Chadiha)
25 (25) Jaguars 5-11-0 With three division games in first four, the Jags are likely to move down before moving up. (Kuharsky)
26 (26) Buccaneers 9-7-0 A defensive-minded rookie coach plus new starting QB minus the offensive coordinator: I'm not so sure that's a winning equation. (Sando)
27 (27) Broncos 8-8-0 It has to take a while for team to buy in after all the drama surrounding former QB Jay Cutler, and then WR Brandon Marshall. (Kuharsky)
28 (28) Browns 4-12-0 I just can't see new coach Eric Mangini turning this team around in one season. (Chadiha)
29 (29) Chiefs 2-14-0 The Chiefs have a chance to climb if they can separate themselves from the Broncos and Raiders. (Kurharsky)
30 (30) Raiders 5-11-0 Will QB JaMarcus Russell start to quiet critics or give us more fodder? (Kuharsky)
31 (31) Rams 2-14-0 The schedule makers did new coach Steve Spagnuolo no favors by sending the Rams on the road three times in their first four games. (Sando)
32 (32) Lions 0-16-0 New coach Jim Schwartz will make the Lions better. He just won't do it fast enough to make a difference this fall. (Chadiha)

Week 1 Power Rankings
according to www.cbssportsline.com

1 Patriots · Trends -
Good luck stopping their offense. Brady will once again put up some huge numbers. The key for their Super Bowl push will be that defense. It is faster.
2 Steelers · Trends -
This is the same team that won the Super Bowl last February. But trying to repeat, as we've seen over the years, isn't easy. The offensive line has to play better for that to be a reality.
3 Colts · Trends -
It's trendy to think this is a team in decline. They are not. New coach Jim Caldwell will continue the Colts playoff run. The offense will score a lot -- as usual.
4 Giants · Trends -
The talent level is high and coach Tom Coughlin is one of the best coaches in football. The key for them will be developing a deep threat in the passing game.
5 Titans · Trends -
The more I saw them this summer, the more I liked. They are tough and new defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil will keep the defense playing good football. They will be a battle every Sunday -- or Thursday this week.
6 Eagles · Trends -
They just never looked right in the preseason because of injuries. That will push me off picking them to win the NFC.
7 Falcons · Trends -
They will be in a lot of shootouts in 2009. The offense will be better, but there are issues with the defense, especially the secondary.
8 Cardinals · Trends -
Don't let their preseason fool you. It doesn't matter for this team, especially the offense. They will win their division again. Bank on it.
9 Chargers · Trends -
Lock of the season: Chargers in the playoffs. Their division is dreadful. They have the talent to do more than just that, but it's time they exceeded the expectations.
10 Packers · Trends -
Their preseason was as impressive as any, even if it doesn't matter. The most important thing was how well the players took the move to the 3-4. Dom Capers is a defensive wizard.
11 Saints · Trends -
It's all about the defense. With Drew Brees, they will score a lot of points. So it's all on new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to turn that defense around.
12 Ravens · Trends -
Their key will be how much they turn the offense over to Joe Flacco. I think he's ready for a bigger dose of it, but that's not the usual Ravens way.
13 Bengals · Trends -
Way too high for this team, you say? They are talented. They will score. They will be better on defense than you think. Playoffs? It's possible.
14 Cowboys · Trends -
Their division is brutal, and I see them as the third team in it. They will need to get some big plays from their receivers to have a chance to move up.
15 Bears · Trends -
I like the addition of Jay Cutler, but I'm not sure they have enough weapons to go with him yet. The secondary is also a concern.
16 Vikings · Trends -
Way too low, right? You know how I feel about the Brett Favre move. It doesn't make them that much better.
17 Texans · Trends -
They aren't ready for their playoff breakthrough. Not in their division. I see another 8-8 season.
18 Panthers · Trends -
They have major issues on their defensive line and they don't throw the ball well enough. That's a bad combination.
19 Dolphins · Trends -
They're a year away. The schedule is tougher and they will come back a little to .500. They will be a force in 2010.
20 Redskins · Trends -
If the pass rush is good, they will be really tough on defense. The offense remains a concern, and it doesn't help that they play in the toughest division.
21 Seahawks · Trends -
They've had some injury issues on their offensive line, which is a concern. I just don't see them overtaking the Cardinals in the division.
22 Bills · Trends -
Their woeful play led to the firing of offensive coordinator Turk Schonert last week. It's not a good start for coach Dick Jauron, who must win or he's gone.
23 Jaguars · Trends -
They showed a much-improved pass offense in the preseason. Now comes the tough part: carrying it over to the real games.
24 Jets · Trends -
They made the right decision to start Mark Sanchez, but now they have to be patient. There will be growing pains.
25 Buccaneers · Trends -
It's not a good sign when the offensive coordinator is dismissed eight days before the season. Raheem Morris will face a trying first season.
26 49ers · Trends -
Shaun Hill is the man at quarterback. Does that excite? I'm just not as high on this team as others are.
27 Broncos · Trends -
Josh McDaniels faces a trying first season without Jay Cutler. Then again, it's his fault he's not there.
28 Raiders · Trends -
They were awful in the preseason, but they have better talent than what they showed. They won't be that bad. Will they?
29 Rams · Trends -
The talent level isn't high. They need one or two more good drafts before they can talk playoffs. But Steve Spagnuolo is the right man for the job.
30 Chiefs · Trends -
Matt Cassel has to show that he wasn't a one-hit wonder, but even if he does this team isn't ready to push for a playoff spot.
31 Browns · Trends -
It doesn't matter who plays quarterback. This team is a year or two away. They will be feisty every week, though.
32 Lions · Trends -
They are in the beginning stages of rebuilding mode. They will win three or four games, which will be an improvement.

NCAA College Football Power Rankings: Week 1

College Football Power Rankings - Week 1
according to www.espn.com
1 Florida (15) 1-0 375 Florida's charitable offering to Charleston Southern -- in which the Bucs graciously offered the Gators a 62-3 tuneup -- offered few new insights into the top-ranked team as UF strolled to its 20th straight season-opening win.
2 Texas 1-0 357 Like Florida, Texas enjoyed a glorified scrimmage in its season opener -- a 59-20 win against Louisiana-Monroe. WR-turned-RB D.J. Monroe rushed for 64 yards and scored on an 89-yard kickoff return.
3 USC 1-0 345 Turns out the frosh QB had some bite ... against San Jose State, at least. Matt Barkley threw for 233 yards and a TD in the Trojans' 56-3 win. Freshman orientation is over, however, with a trip to Columbus looming.
4 Alabama 1-0 332 It wasn't pretty at times but Alabama made the plays it needed to against Virginia Tech in the Georgia Dome, as Mark Ingram gave the Tide the spark they needed in the fourth quarter with two TDs.
5 Oklahoma State 1-0 302 Georgia's opening scoring drive aside, OSU dispelled some of the criticism leveled at Big 12 defenses with an impressive victory over the Bulldogs in Stillwater. Dez Bryant wasn't too bad on the offensive side as well.
6 Penn State 1-0 290 Joe Pa returning to the sidelines might have been the most compelling story line in PSU's dominating win over Akron. Though a combined 13 receptions for 203 yards from a couple of sophomore WRs -- Chaz Powell and Derek Moye -- was a welcome sight for PSU.
7 California 1-0 262 Last season against Maryland, Jahvid Best scattered pieces of his breakfast, lunch and perhaps the previous night's dinner on the field. This season he left helpless Terps defenders scattered in his wake, rushing for 137 yards and two TDs.
8 Brigham Young 1-0 243 The image many will take from BYU's win over OU is that of the defending Heisman winner crumpled on the Cowboys Stadium turf. But Sam Bradford's shoulder injury won't take away from what was one of the most important victories in BYU's history.
9 Mississippi 1-0 241 Jevan Snead didn't look like the player expected to make Ole Miss a challenger in the SEC West in the first half. Second-half Jevan Snead sure did, though, as he drove the Rebels past Memphis with two fourth-quarter TDs, overcoming a shaky start.
Ohio State 1-0 241 Navy made OSU regret extending it an invitation to the Horseshoe, especially after coming within a 2-point conversion of tying the game late in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes will have to be sharper with USC in town this weekend.
11 LSU 1-0 225 LSU will be pleased to return from its longest-ever road trip with a win against Washington. The Tigers will be less pleased with the fact that going round trip from Baton Rouge to Seattle seemed easier than getting their defense off the field against UW.
12 Boise State 1-0 214 The season opener will be remembered more for the postgame punch that ended LeGarrette Blount's career, but it shouldn't be forgotten that the Broncos cleared the most imposing hurdle between them and an undefeated season with a 19-8 win over the Ducks.
13 Oklahoma 0-1 189 Uh oh. Oklahoma's bite from the injury bug went from bad (Jermaine Gresham) to catastrophic. With Sam Bradford's shoulder injury keeping him out 2-4 weeks, it remains to be seen how the Sooners will cope in his absence.
14 Georgia Tech 1-0 172 Sloppiness aside, Georgia Tech really needed only a few moments of brilliance from Josh Nesbitt and Jonathan Dwyer to brush aside Jacksonville State. The Yellow Jackets know they'll need to sharpen up soon with a visit from Clemson on Thursday night.
15 Virginia Tech 0-1 162 The ACC favorite was hailed as a possible title contender. There's no reason to think the former is no longer true, but the chances for the latter coming to fruition took a serious blow in a loss to Alabama.
16 Notre Dame 1-0 148 Notre Dame versus Michigan at the Big House probably didn't need any extra window dressing. But just in case the casual fan forgot about the rivalry, Jimmy Clausen and Michael Floyd provided some with their passing exhibition in a win over Nevada.
17 Miami (FL) 1-0 129 Jacory Harris was calm, cool and collected on the field (and on the sidelines) as the Canes passed their first test. But the four-week gauntlet continues as Georgia Tech visits on Sept. 17, followed by a trip to Virginia Tech on Sept. 26.
18 TCU 0-0 127 The Horned Frogs get things started with a visit to Virginia on Saturday (ESPNU, 3:30 ET). Yes, that's the same Cavs team which lost to William & Mary.
19 Nebraska 1-0 83 QB Zac Lee was solid, but it was RB Roy Helu who stole the show (152 yards, 3 TDs) against Florida Atlantic as the Huskers won their nation-best 24th straight season opener.
20 Georgia 0-1 69 The disappointment of giving up an early lead against OSU was made worse by the news that Georgia will lose OT Trinton Sturdivant for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
21 Cincinnati 1-0 67 The team to beat in the Big East? Tough to argue now. There were those who slept on Cincy this year, but not after an impressive opening performance by the Bearcats who, led by Tony Pike, were too much for Rutgers.
22 Utah 1-0 65 Lost in the din of BYU sidelining a Heisman winner and Boise State's postgame fisticuffs was Utah -- the nation's reigning BCS buster -- extending the nation's longest winning streak to 15 games with a win over Utah State.
23 North Carolina 1-0 58 Sure, it was against The Citadel, but North Carolina can smile about its 260 yards rushing in its season-opening win, including Shaun Draughn's 118 yards.
24 Florida State 0-1 53 It was a tough way to start the season, but the Noles should rebound and pick up their first win against Jacksonville State this weekend before visiting BYU on Sept. 19.
25 Kansas 1-0 32 No surprise. The Jayhawks made it look easy against Northern Colorado. A trip to UTEP on Saturday to face an explosive offense should provide a stiffer test for Todd Reesing & Co.
Others receiving votes: Missouri (28), Oregon (14), Oregon State (11), Clemson (11), Iowa (9), Michigan State (5), UCLA (5), Arkansas (4), Michigan (3), Baylor (2), South Carolina (2)

NCAA Football Power Rankings
according to www.si.com

1 Last Week: 1 Florida Gators (1-0)
One more preseason game, then we get to see what the Gators can really do when Tennessee comes to town.
Last game: Beat Charleston Southern, 62-3
Next game: Saturday vs. Troy

2 Last Week: 2 Texas Longhorns (1-0)
Like the Gators, the Longhorns play two preseason games before a huge vengeance game. Texas will thump Wyoming while tuning up for Texas Tech.
Last game: Beat Louisiana-Monroe, 59-20
Next game: Saturday vs. Wyoming

3 Last Week: 10 Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0)
The big question for the Crimson Tide was the revamped offensive line. With 268 rushing yards against Virginia Tech last weekend, guard Mike Johnson & Co. answered that question. Alabama's defense is excellent, and its offense is better than the one that helped the Tide to a 12-0 start last season.
Last game: Beat Virginia Tech, 34-24
Next game: Saturday vs. Florida International

4 Last Week: 4 USC Trojans (1-0)
The Trojans ran all over San Jose State, allowing freshman quarterback Matt Barkley to get comfortable in his debut. Expect more smashmouth running against Ohio State, which struggled against Navy.
Last game: Beat San Jose State, 56-3
Next game: Saturday at Ohio State

5 Last Week: 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys (1-0)
If the Cowboys' defense can play every game like it did against Georgia, the Pokes can compete for a national title. If the Cowboys' offense can avoid playing the way it did against Georgia for the remainder of the season, the Pokes can compete for the national title.
Last game: Beat Georgia, 24-10
Next game: Saturday vs. Houston

6 Last Week: -- Brigham Young Cougars (1-0)
Call me reactionary for putting the Cougars here, but it sure looked like they were destined for a victory even before Sam Bradford got hurt. If the BCS cronies don't want a major debate, they'll have to hope Florida State (Sept. 19), TCU (Oct. 24) or Utah (Nov. 28) knocks off BYU.
Last game: Beat Oklahoma, 14-13
Next game: Saturday at Tulane

7 Last Week: 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)
Yes, Navy's flexbone offense is tricky, and yes, the Buckeyes had a pretty good reason to look past the Midshipmen, but top five teams should not have such trouble dispatching a service academy. Fortunately for Ohio State, a win Saturday would slingshot the Buckeyes back into the top five.
Last game: Beat Navy, 31-27
Next game: Saturday vs. USC

8 Last Week: 8 Ole Miss Rebels (1-0)
The Rebels looked pretty shaky in the first half against Memphis. They won't have that luxury against SEC opponents. The Rebels are off this week before facing Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 19. Then they'll play at South Carolina on just five days rest.
Last game: Beat Memphis, 45-14
Next game: Sept. 19 vs. Southeastern Louisiana

9 Last Week: 18 California Golden Bears (1-0)
The Golden Bears looked awesome against Maryland. I had them way underrated. I apologize to Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz and the rest of Cal's fans for the slight. Hope I didn't harsh the buzz in Berkeley.
Last game: Beat Maryland, 52-13
Next game: Saturday vs. Eastern Washington

10 Last Week: 9 LSU Tigers (1-0)
Sorry Tigers, but you must fall a spot after giving up 478 yards to a team that finished 0-12 last season. I have a sneaking suspicion new Washington coach Steve Sarkisian and a rejuvenated Tim Tebow of the Pacific Northwest (Jake Locker) had a lot to do with that, but we'll have to see how the teams develop.
Last game: Beat Washington, 31-23
Next game: Saturday vs. Vanderbilt

11 Last Week: 11 TCU Horned Frogs (0-0)
The Horned Frogs have had all summer to prepare for a team that lost its opener to William and Mary. That's bad news for the school Thomas Jefferson founded.
Last game: Idle
Next game: Saturday at Virginia

12 Last Week: 12 Boise State Broncos (1-0)
The Broncos beat an Oregon team that was far worse than advertised. Now begins the cavalcade of creampuffs. Unless something dramatic happens, expect to see Boise State in this slot for the remainder of the season.
Last game: Beat Oregon, 19-8
Next game: Saturday vs. Miami (Ohio)

13 Last Week: 6 Virginia Tech Hokies (0-1)
The Hokies' defense got overwhelmed by an Alabama offense that may just be a juggernaut. The good news? Tailback Ryan Williams is a stud, and there isn't a team in the ACC that can steamroll like the Crimson Tide.
Last game: Lost to Alabama, 34-24
Next game: Saturday vs. Marshall

14 Last Week: 14 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-0)
Woe unto Clemson's Kevin Steele, who faces every defensive coordinator's worst nightmare Thursday. With just five days to prepare, the Tigers will have to stop Georgia Tech's flexbone. Good luck with that.
Last game: Beat Jacksonville State, 37-17
Next game: Thursday vs. Clemson

15 Last Week: 3 Oklahoma Sooners (0-1)
It isn't a total nightmare scenario for the Sooners. According to coach Bob Stoops, quarterback Sam Bradford could be back in two to four weeks, meaning he might be ready as early as the Oct. 3 game at Miami. At that point, the Sooners still won't have played a Big 12 game. Backup quarterback Landry Jones and his mustache should be adequate for now.
Last game: Lost to BYU, 14-13
Next game: Saturday vs. Idaho State

16 Last Week: 16 Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0)
The Nittany Lions looked strong against Akron on Saturday, and if they can guard Greg Paulus out to the three-point line this week, they should roll to 2-0. Whoops, wrong sport. On Saturday, Paulus will get a true welcome back to football from a different breed of Big Ten team than the one he faced last week.
Last game: Beat Akron, 31-7
Next game: Saturday vs. Syracuse

17 Last Week: 22 Cincinnati Bearcats (1-0)
Bearcats coach Brian Kelly has always wondered what might happen if he had a returning starting quarterback. On Monday against Rutgers, he found out. Tony Pike threw for 362 yards and three touchdowns, and Cincy crushed the Scarlet Knights.
Last game: Beat Rutgers, 47-15
Next game: Saturday vs. Southeast Missouri State

18 Last Week: 25 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0)
The Fighting Irish looked fantastic against Nevada. Judging by Michigan's season-opening improvement, Notre Dame will be tested on Saturday. I've harped on the fact the Irish aren't as deep as some of the elite teams, but one thought struck me while watching highlights from the Nevada win. How many teams in the country have a pair of receivers as good as Michael Floyd and Golden Tate? Not many.
Last game: Beat Nevada, 35-0
Next game: Saturday at Michigan

19 Last Week: 19 Oregon State Beavers (1-0)
Beating Portland State didn't prove much, but it did prove the Rodgers brothers (James and Jacquizz) have returned healthy after an offseason spent rehabilitating injuries. Things in Corvallis should get interesting in the next few weeks when Lyle Moevao, last season's starting quarterback, finally gets healthy. Will Sean Canfield keep the starting job?
Last game: Beat Portland State, 34-7
Next game: at UNLV

20 Last Week: 20 Utah Utes (1-0)
The Utes can't afford to give up too many 96-yard runs like the one Utah State's Robert Turpin ripped off last Thursday. Still, junior college transfer Terrance Cain looked comfortable leading the offense. He'll get another tune-up against San Jose State before Utah travels to Eugene to face Oregon in an attempt to bolster its BCS-buster credentials.
Last game: Beat Utah State, 35-17
Next game: Saturday at San Jose State

21

Last Week: --
Missouri Tigers (1-0)
The Tigers were supposed to fall off after losing Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin and Chase Coffman. Against Illinois, they didn't look like they'd missed a beat.
Last game: Beat Illinois, 37-9
Next game: Saturday vs. Bowling Green 22

Last Week: --
Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes (1-0)
Quarterback Jacory Harris was the breakout star of Monday's win at Florida State, throwing for 396 yards. If the Hurricanes can develop a pass rush, they could be very dangerous.
Last game: Beat Florida State, 38-34
Next game: Sept. 17 vs. Georgia Tech 23

Last Week: 23
Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-0)
Quarterback Taylor Potts and company might set some records this week when they face a Rice team that gave up 516 yards to Alabama-Birmingham.
Last game: Beat North Dakota, 38-13
Next game: Saturday vs. Rice
24 Last Week: 24 Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0)
The Blackshirts held Florida Atlantic to 236 passing yards and picked off two passes. That's excellent practice for the pass-happy offenses Nebraska will see in the Big 12.
Last game: Beat Florida Atlantic, 49-3
Next game: Saturday vs. Arkansas State

25 Last Week: 15 Georgia Bulldogs (0-1)
The Bulldogs' defense shined against Oklahoma State. Unfortunately, Georgia's offense stopped after a brilliant opening drive. With left tackle Trinton Sturdivant out for a second consecutive season with a torn ACL, the Bulldogs will have to adjust on the fly again as they prepare to open SEC play this week.
Last game: Lost to Oklahoma State, 24-10
Next game: Saturday vs. South Carolina

NBA Power Rankings

NBA Power Rankings
1 Last Week: 1 Los Angeles Lakers (46-10)
If you don't believe them when they say they can win a championship without Bynum, at least consider what others around the league are saying. "I think they are better without Bynum," an Eastern Conference head coach said. "Look at the way the league is trending. The really good teams are the ones that play fast. This Lakers team plays really fast." Bynum's replacement in the starting lineup, Lamar Odom, continues to play well, having pulled down at least 14 rebounds in seven games this month.

2 Last Week: 4 Cleveland Cavaliers (43-11)
Remember when Wally Szczerbiak was deemed expendable, when the only reason to speak his name was to remind everyone of his expiring contract? Maybe the Cavs decided to hold on to him because he is actually needed. Szczerbiak's consistent scoring during West's absence helped keep the Cavs rolling. It's looking more and more like Szczerbiak will be counted on to play significant minutes down the stretch.

3 Last Week: 2 San Antonio Spurs (37-17)
Ginobili had been coming on offensively of late, scoring at least 30 points in three of his last six appearances, before being sidelined for two to three weeks with a stress reaction in his right ankle. Coach Gregg Popovich expressed optimism about Ginobili's status. "New bone has already been laying down, they've seen it on the X-rays," Popovich told reporters. "So the healing process has already begun."

4 Last Week: 3 Boston Celtics (45-12)
There are two ways to look at Garnett's recent injury. One, the Celtics may struggle without their defensive quarterback. Or two, the injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as it gives the hyperactive Garnett a few weeks to cool his engines and refresh his body in time for the playoffs. I'll take Option B. Remember, Garnett missed nine games in the middle of last season and had a full tank for Boston's championship run.

5 Last Week: 5 Orlando Magic (41-14)
Their deadline acquisition of Alston for, essentially, the seldom-used Brian Cook and a first-round pick isn't in the Pau Gasol-to-the-Lakers category, but it was a savvy move. "I couldn't believe they got him," said an Eastern Conference assistant coach, who noted that, when Nelson returns next season, the Magic could get more for Alston than the the pick they gave to Houston. Alston was steady in his first start, scoring 12 points with nine assists as Orlando dusted division rival Miami on Sunday.

6 Last Week: 7 Denver Nuggets (37-19)
Could free-agent forward/center Mikki Moore be bound for Denver? While Boston is still considered the front-runner, Moore's agent reportedly had discussions with Denver last week. The Nuggets could certainly use another big man. Kenyon Martin has back spasms and the Nuggets suffered a scare when Nene went down with a bruised right knee in Sunday's loss at Milwaukee.

7 Last Week: 8 Houston Rockets (35-21)
Who will be Alston's long-term replacement at point guard? Houston should have a good idea by the end of the season whether it will be Kyle Lowry, a 2006 first-round pick acquired in the Alston trade, or Aaron Brooks, a 2007 first-round pick who had 19 points and eight assists as a starter in a victory against Dallas in the first game after the trade.

8 Last Week: 10 Portland Trail Blazers (35-20)
Memo to those who have questioned me about putting Joe Johnson over Brandon Roy on my All-NBA third team in Sports Illustrated's midseason package: It was close. Razor close. That's not to say Roy won't end the season with the spot, especially if he continues to have more weeks like this past one. Roy averaged 29.3 points in three Portland home victories.

9 Last Week: 13 Utah Jazz (33-23)
A 3-0 week was overshadowed by the loss of longtime owner Larry Miller, who died from complications from diabetes on Friday. "I looked up to Larry," Mavs owner Mark Cuban wrote in an e-mail to SI.com. "He was fiery, he stuck to his beliefs, even if they weren't popular, and he wanted to win as badly as anyone. He pulled no punches, whether it was letting the guys know how he felt in a huddle or in the locker room, or his work ethic in the business community. It was clear that there are few people in this world as competitive as Larry."

10 Last Week: 6 Dallas Mavericks (33-22)
Jerry Stackhouse, who expected to be traded or bought out by now, will now be thrust back into the rotation after the Mavs lost Jason Terry to a broken hand. After missing 40 games with a right foot injury, Stackhouse went scoreless in his first two games back last week. "If you love to play basketball, you love to compete," Stackhouse told the Dallas Morning News. "That's all my focus is, to be a contributor in helping us achieve our goals, and that's winning a championship."

College Football Power Rankings

College Football Power RankingsLoaded with NFL talent, Ohio State kicksoff the year at No. 1 Story Highlights
Ohio State may have six players drafted in the first two rounds in April
An injury to Georgia's left tackle dropped the Bulldogs to No. 3
Seven of the top 10 teams are from the SEC or Big 12
Many of you have already written off the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes as frauds based on the season-ending performances of their 2006 and '07 teams. That's certainly your prerogative.
But here's the thing: I've studied the depth charts of the various contenders frontward and backward. I've spoken with people who know far more about evaluating football talent than I do. And all of it leads me to the same, inescapable conclusion that, presumably, will induce groans from coast to coast.
Ohio State is the most talented team in the country this season.
SI.com NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline, who runs TFY Draft service, projects nine Ohio State starters to be selected in the first three rounds next April, including three sure first-rounders (RB Chris Wells, CB Malcolm Jenkins and LB James Laurinaitis) and three others who could join them (DT Doug Worthington, LB Marcus Freeman and WR Brian Robiskie).
In all, TFY considers 16 junior or senior Buckeyes worthy of being drafted (though one of them is Michigan transfer Justin Boren, who won't play this season). Pauline hasn't posted every team's report yet, but says Ohio State's is, "hands down," the most talent-stocked roster.
"You could basically set up shop in Columbus and [draft] a really good team," said Pauline. "USC probably has more impact players on defense, but when you're comparing the two programs, the Trojans fall short of overall elite talent. There's a lot of talent on LSU's roster but not the large number of elite players as Ohio State's."
And that's before even adding Terrelle Pryor to the mix.
For most of the past seven months -- right up until a couple of weeks ago, in fact -- there was one team I considered better than Ohio State. That was Georgia. But then the Dawgs lost their starting left tackle, Trinton Sturdivant, for the season. It was a costly blow both because Sturdivant manned an extremely important position and because of the ripple effect it will have on the rest of the offensive line, which was already inexperienced. That dropped Georgia behind both the Buckeyes and Oklahoma, which returns all five starting offensive linemen.

NCAA Football Power Rankings
1 -- Ohio State Buckeyes (11-2 in 2007)
All eyes Saturday will be on ... well, Pryor, if he gets in the game, but also DE Lawrence Wilson. The highly touted junior, who broke his leg in last year's season opener and missed the rest of the year, steps in for departed star Vernon Gholston.
First game: Saturday vs. Youngstown State.

2 -- Oklahoma Sooners (11-3)
The Sooners' defensive line is impressive. DE Auston English was a dominant pass rusher when healthy, DT DeMarcus Granger was an All-Big 12 honoree prior to his Fiesta Bowl suspension and DT Gerald McCoy was the Big 12's top defensive freshman.
First game: Saturday vs. Chattanooga.

3 -- Georgia Bulldogs (11-2)
Assuming the Dawgs put away Georgia Southern early Saturday, star tailback Knowshon Moreno will likely give way to a pair of backups already being touted as the next in line -- redshirt freshman Caleb King and true frosh Richard Samuel.
First game: Saturday vs. Georgia Southern.

4 -- USC Trojans (11-2)
It will be interesting to see how the Trojans' tailback rotation plays out early in the season. It's no secret Joe McKnight will see the field often, but will offseason standout Allen Bradford supplant the more experienced C.J. Gable and Stafon Johnson?
First game: Saturday at Virginia.

5 -- Missouri Tigers (12-2)
Despite returning a largely veteran team, eighth-year coach Gary Pinkel plans to play as many as eight true freshmen this season, the most of his tenure. High-flying receiver Jerrell Jackson has attracted the most attention so far.
First game: Saturday vs. Illinois.

6 -- LSU Tigers (12-2)
It speaks to the level of LSU's recruiting these past few years that a team can lose as many veteran standouts as the Tigers did -- 13 starters -- and still appear to be loaded at nearly every position. QB and cornerback are the concerns.
First game: Saturday vs. Appalachian State.

7 -- Florida Gators (9-4)
The Gators may well contend for the national championship, but their preseason standing took a hit due to the season-ending injury of TE Cornelius Ingram and the fact that star WR Percy Harvin missed most of fall camp recovering from a heel injury.
First game: Saturday vs. Hawaii.

8 -- Texas Tech Red Raiders (9-4)
The bar gets set pretty high for Mike Leach's quarterbacks. Having thrown for 5,705 yards and 48 touchdowns last season, Leach says of third-year starter Graham Harrell: "We expect him to do the same thing -- a few more yards perhaps."
First game: Saturday vs. Eastern Washington.

9 -- Auburn Tigers (9-4)
Is it a good sign or a bad sign that offensive coordinator Tony Franklin has yet to choose a starting quarterback between sophomore Kodi Burns and juco transfer Chris Todd? Burns is more of a dual threat but Todd is a veteran of the spread.
First game: Saturday vs. Louisiana-Monroe.

10 -- Clemson Tigers (9-4)
There's technically nothing at stake in Saturday's opener, but is this the biggest game of Tommy Bowden's tenure? All the momentum of a contract extension and preseason ACC favorite status could go out the window were he to get upstaged by Nick Saban.
First game: Saturday vs. Alabama.
