Predictions
No. 8 Cincinnati at No. 21 USF
7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
After taking over for an injured Matt Grothe, Bulls QB B.J. Daniels did what no one thought he could do ... win at Florida State. Now, he’ll try to do what Grothe couldn’t do in three tries ... beat the Bearcats.
Unfortunately for South Florida, the Cincinnati defense is several steps up from the Seminoles.
However, a similar situation is out there for Bearcat QB Tony Pike, who has built a burgeoning Heisman candidacy at the expense of some weaklings. The Bulls’ defensive unit is no pushover, leading the Big East in scoring defense (9.4 points per game, No. 5 nationally), total defense (263 yards per game) and pass defense (158 yards per game).
In a tight game such as this, the brilliance of coach Brian Kelly gives the Bearcats a solid edge.
Opening point spread: South Florida by 2
Pick: Cincinnati 24-19
No. 20 Oklahoma
vs. No. 3 Texas at Dallas
Noon ET, ABC
While Sam Bradford’s shoulder and Colt McCoy’s Heisman Trophy audition grab all the headlines and camera time, the Red River Shootout will come down to what it always comes down to ... old fashion football.
In the last 10 meetings, the team that has run the ball better has won. The squad that accomplishes that this year will have certainly earned it.
Texas owns the nation’s best run defense (allowing just 46.2 yards per game on the ground). Oklahoma isn’t far behind, ranking third in that category (53.6).
The Sooners’ combo of DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown should have the advantage over a Longhorn ground game that netted only 46 yards on 25 carries last Saturday against a pedestrian Colorado defense.
Mack Brown knows all too well that the loser of this game isn’t out of the national championship picture. This time, he can take solace in that.
Opening point spread: Texas by 1
Pick: Oklahoma 24-23
No. 6 USC at No. 25 Notre Dame
3:30 p.m. ET, NBC
Pete Carroll seems thoroughly unconcerned about the Irish. On Tuesday morning, he used his Twitter account to gather opinions on if the Trojan marching band drum major should shave his goatee or not.
We tend to share that apathy. After all, Notre Dame hasn’t been able to get within 35 points of Carroll’s Trojans in the last two years.
Yes, Irish QB Jimmy Clausen worked his way into Heisman Trophy consideration and his supporting cast has improved greatly, but just how much does that close the gap between these two programs?
Opening point spread: USC by 11.5
Pick: USC 28-13
